Military Expo Spotlight: Skye Tracer

1.  What inspired you to start your business in Second Life?
I had purchased a home in SL and asked the owner if he would add a deck to it.  I was watching him work and thought I could do that. I started to build structures and it all started from there.

2.  Tell us about business, what were your aims and goals in Second Life when you started the brand?
I originally started building structures. Garages, boathouses and hangars but got into aircraft building by accident. My original goals were to build the best possible products that I could and at least make enough $L to pay SL expenses.

3.  How long have you owned your business in Second Life?
A few years. I started the business 4.5 years ago.

4.  We are thrilled to have your business come to our military expo this year! What about the expo inspired you to take part?
The jets I make are the first swept wing jet fighters to see aerial combat in RL.

5.  What are your future plans for  your business in Second Life?  Any new and exciting things on the horizon?
Ideally I'd like to build a few more vintage jets.

6.  How long have you been in Second Life?
  5+ years

7. What made you first join Second Life?
I was looking for a new game and wanted to try out a virtual reality.

8.  What are some of the strangest things you have experienced or seen in Second Life?
I've seen desolate wastelands, slum cities, and whimsical fantasy lands. Wheat fields, battlefields, fairy tail lands, marinas and airports. I have enjoyed seeing most all of it.

9.  Other than owning a business in Second Life and making awesome products, what are some other things you like to do while you are in Second Life?
I like to fly jets in aerial combat, sail, and watch movies.

10.  If you could invite anyone from RL into SL, who would it be?
 My best friend.

Military Expo Kick Off Party Recap!

Today was the the kick off party for the Military Expo! Events kicked off at 10 am slt with a 2 hour event with DJ Anakin and Host Cathlace from Amelias' Pilot Lounge! After the event, guests were treated to a special Aerosmith Tribute Band Concert.  Everyone danced and sang along to some of their favorite Aerosmith tunes:

Created with flickr slideshow.

Of course Aerosmith is awesome enough but, guests were delighted even more with a special aviation event form the 23rd Wing! The 23rd Fighter Wing demonstrated its combined arms capabilities by repelling an attempted Soviet invasion of Kunming Air Base. The event featured air-to-air combat with jet fighter aircraft, rescue and combat helicopters, heavy lift aircraft, tanks and other armored vehicles, and infantry/paratroops. We were lucky enough to Live Stream this event on our official Live Stream channel and to also post it on Youtube for everyone to view:

Kudos to the 23rd Wing for an awesome event and for flying myself, several SL reporters, and members of the Relay for Life in SL team today!

And despite all the fun, the day was not over yet...the partying continued well into the night, with a special two hour performance with DJ Anakin making a return, this time with Host Lilly and the Second Life Cheerleading Squad (SLCS)! The SLCS performed a variety of stunts and demonstrated why they are the best cheerleading squad in SL!

Special thanks to all our members, guests, and exhibitors for being patient throughout the sim problems we had and for partying with us throughout the day! Join us tomorrow for another jam packed fill day of events and exhibitions!

Military Expo Spotlight: Avadan Grantham & GAF!

Today's Military Expo Spotlight is on Avadan Grantham, who also owns GAF:

1.  What inspired you to start your business in Second Life?
I started as an experiment in making aircraft.....after 2 years and a bit i had one flying...lol. I've been selling them mainly for charity. I was always interested in flying in SL..that led me to the Pacific Fleet Group.....re-enacting the period of the Pacific war in 1942. Thats when I noticed the uniforms available were....well....i thought i could do better...so i learned clothes making and put a lot of research into each uniform. I have concentrated on no prim attachments for ease of movement and flying in sl etc.

2.  Tell us about business, what were your aims and goals in Second Life when you started the brand?
GAF..."Grantham Aeroplane Facsimile" was the initial branding but has now diversified into clothing and developement of aircraft in a cooperative manner. I dont have a lot of time in world...but its good to be able to turn a request into reality.

3.  How long have you owned your business in Second Life?
About 2 years now.

4.  We are thrilled to have your business come to our military expo this year! What about the expo inspired you to take part?

5.  What are your future plans for  your business in Second Life?  Any new and exciting things on the horizon?
Continuing as I have been most likely....the time factor is my main enemy...i'm happy with the way things are at the moment. If I can supply goods that meet the quality and demands...all the better....

6. How long have you been in Second Life?
Overall about 3 years now...on and off

7.  What made you first join Second Life?
I saw an article in a computer Mag....looked interesting...left it alone for a while...then came back to enjoy the wonders...lol

8.  What are some of the strangest things you have experienced or seen in Second Life?
Not so much things or places...although there are mighty strange things in both categories....but some people in here are.......well........committed...or should be....lol

9.  Other than owning a business in Second Life and making awesome products, what are some other things you like to do while you are in Second Life?
I have a group of regular friends in here and we have fun....and sometimes I DJ......I also can provide services for functions  eg weddings.

10.  If you could invite anyone from RL into SL, who would it be?
hmmm......a tough one.....there are many great musicians in here....but damn it would be good to see Mick Jagger....LOLOL

Military Expo Spotlight: Christi Charron & SLCS!

The Military Expo also has a non military section for people who wanted to show off non military items and services. The purpose of doing this was so that military and non military content creators could network and meet each other and of course so our Expo guests would have plenty to look at!  One such exhibitor are the Second Life Cheerleading Squad or SLCS for short.  SLCS owner and creator, Christi Charron was kind enough to answer a few questions about SLCS and what she likes to do when in Second Life:

1.  What inspired you to start your business in Second Life?
I wanted to be on an active cheerleading squad in Second Life and I could not find any. so with the help of many friends we started our own!

2.  Tell us about business, what were your aims and goals in Second Life when you started the brand?
We promote other businesses around the grid by performing there and inviting our 2700+ member VIP Group. Our cheerleaders are friendly and entertaining while our VIPs are a fantastic diverse group of friends,
some of which are quite entertaining themselves, lol.

3.  How long have you owned your business in Second Life?
Just over four years.

4.  We are thrilled to have your business come to our military expo this year! What about the expo inspired you to take part?
We always want to be a part of professionally put-together events and enjoy meeting new people!

5.  What are your future plans for  your business in Second Life?  Any new and exciting things on the horizon?
We are always moving forward, both technically in our performances and within our business plan.  We are always trying new ways to entertain and insure we can generate a full sim of traffic for our fantastic customers and business partners.

6.  How long have you been in Second Life?
Just over four years.

7.  What made you first join Second Life?
After being home-bound for several weeks following an auto accident. I went looking for a MMO that was like real life and found Second Life!

8.  What are some of the strangest things you have experienced or seen in Second Life?
Well, it's the range of people it attracts I think that is unusual. Some of the nicest people I've ever met have been some of my SL friends, while some of the meanest people I've ever met enjoy using Second Life to bully others by doing things like griefing sims for 8 months straight. The spectrum range from the sane to the insane is rather wide I guess I'm trying to say, lol.

9.  Other than owning a business in Second Life and making awesome products, what are some other things you like to do while you are in Second Life?
I love shopping and just hanging out with my friends and teammates in the stadium usually. it doesn't get any better than that, lol.

10.  If you could invite anyone from RL into SL, who would it be?
Well, I wish my brother would get on SL, but he he so computer  illiterate and uninterested that it's never gonna happen.

Catch the SLCS at the Military Expo Opening Day Events at 4pm slt! To learn more about the squad check out their official links below:

Military Expo Spotlight: Aeon Voom & Amok Dynamics!

Throughout Military Expo week, we will highlight many of our exhibitors.  Today's spotlight is on Aeon Voom, owner of Amok Dynamics.  Aeon was kind enough to answer a few questions about Amok and what he likes to do in Second Life:

1.  What inspired you to start your business in Second Life?
I'm a real life modeller in aircraft and military models. At some point i did started 3d modelling and Second Life is just the right platform for this to express yourself in a simple enviroment. It is just naturally that, if you are good in what you are doing, people want to pay you for your work.

2.  Tell us about business, what were your aims and goals in Second Life when you started the brand?
I did not had any particular aim as i started AMOK. And i still have none besides to make a decend living off it, as it is now my full time job.

3.  How long have you owned your business in Second Life?
I am in business in SL now for aproximatly 3 1/2 years.

4.  We are thrilled to have your business come to our military expo this year! What about the expo inspired you to take part?
I do know the Flying Tigers and their events. Who am i to not take the offer?

5.  What are your future plans for  your business in Second Life?  Any new and exciting things on the horizon?
We will have a couple new tanks coming soon (BTR-90 - Challenger II) - Since we got the B1 out we plan to make a soviet equivalent (probably a TU-95 'Bear' or a TU22M3 'Blackfire').  We also got the IL76 Candid and derivates coming up as well as a KC-10 to feed those kerosine thirsty jets! everything in mesh - naturally.

6.  How long have you been in Second Life?
Hey wait. Don't we got that printed into our profiles? *looks* It says: 03/12/2007 (4 years 11 months; 1822 days) FINE. Now i feel OLD.

7.  What made you first join Second Life?
It was an AD on GMX. Which is a email provider in Germany.

8.  What are some of the strangest things you have experienced or seen in Second Life?
You do not want to know this. You really do not. But let me put it like this: There is hardly anything that can surprise me anymore.

9.  Other than owning a business in Second Life and making awesome products, what are some other things you like to do while you are in Second Life?
I used to enjoy a couple things. But due to the nature of my work in SL now, i usually log off and do something different in my freetime. Like reading a book!

10.  If you could invite anyone from RL into SL, who would it be?
My best buddy forever. Unfortunatly he is not big with computers. I think thats why he is still my best buddy too. He is great in explaining me that it is 'completely nuts how you can make money with THAT!'

Be sure to look for the Amok Dynamics shop at the Military Expo and for more information about Amok, please check out the following links:

Blog Spotlight: London Sims Owner Debs Regent!

Nexgen Aviation is currently holding it's FEATURED Second Life Destinations event in the London Sims this week.  Debs Regent, owner and operator of the London Sims was kind enough to answer some questions about London:

1. So tell us about the London Sims? How long have they been here, what inspired you to start the sims?
Goodness, we have been here for 6 years, since 2006, it seems such a long time now! I was inspired to start London after meeting a very dear friend at Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge. At the time she was an avid Second Lifer and suggested I join. I love the London vibe and architecture in real life, and if I wanted to do anything, it was to bring that into Second Life too.

2.  What are some interesting things to do in London?
Wow - big question. There are a lot of interesting things to do in London. Many I have forgotten because they are always there. We focus on realism, so the London bus is important and taxis too. However my treat is always the Expo. When we have an Expo there is an opportunity to see amazing things that someone has created, such as the Nexgen Expo, where you can look at, and go in, World War 2 and modern planes. You get a sense of how cramped it was for the pilots during WW2 and the skill they needed to fly these things.

3.  Obviously Nexgen is thrilled that you opened up Hyde Park for our expo! Are you an aviation enthusiast?
I would love to fly! I plan to go for glider lessons first in real life. At present my flight experience consists of being a passenger while other people fly. One day... I promise myself. In fact I have hoped that I might get a flight as a passenger in Second Life. I would love that opportunity. I have to confess that as a little girl, I used to by modelling kits of planes, and put them together. Very un-girlie I know.

4.  There are many favorite planes in Hyde Park, any particular one catch your eye?
The plane I love best is the Spitfire. Of course it’s a British plane and Nexgen has recreated the sense of it so accurately. It looks like the real thing (I saw one fly at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford - which used to be a US Airforce base). When my mother was a child, she used to watch them as they flew over London and, as everyone knows, the Spitfire was the decision maker of the Battle of Britain. It’s great to know that when you buy one of these planes from Nexgen, you also get a brief history of the actual plane itself.

5.  What are some fun things you love doing in Second Life?
I haven’t done them all yet. I have tried a hot air balloon ride, a racing car ride, shooting targets and also clubbing, and shopping – which all women love, but I haven’t flown yet and that is next on my list of ‘must do’s’.

6.  What are your future plans for London? Any exciting or new things on the horizon.
London is always changing and growing. I am working on making it a more interesting place to visit and a better place for merchants to gain awareness and sales. It is also a growing community and we will soon be outgrowing the 4 regions that we currently have now. So watch this space... as people say.  As for recent future. Come to the Nexgen expo this week!

You can learn more about the London Sims by visiting their official blog:

Another 100 AVI day!

Introducing Magwe Airfield 1941!

We are pleased to announce the creation of Magwe Airfield 1941 on the WW2 Battlefield sim! Magwe is ran by Brig. Gen Devyn Smythe, who also provided an overview of the sim:

WW2 Battlefield sim is a joint effort by SL's Flying Tigers and  Department of War to recreate and reenact historical military events of the World War II era. This year's events will focus on the Chinese and Pacific theaters. The theme on the sim will change monthly and coincide with historical calender dates. This is the creators' contribution to our continuing effort to recognize our veterans.

This month's theme is Magwe Airfield which was located in Burma in 1941. This was a Royal Air Force base that was used in the Flying Tiger's retreat into China. Below is a short historical quote from Wikipedia:

"After Rangoon was lost to the Japanese at the end of February, the AVG relocated to Magwe, a small British airfield more than 300 miles north of Rangoon. Chennault started moving elements of the now reconstituted 3rd Squadron to Magwe as reinforcement to his worn down 1st and 2nd squadrons. Aircraft attrition became so high that at this point, individual squadron distinctions became meaningless, and all three squadrons had elements based there, along with a number of RAF aircraft. In total, the Allies had 38 aircraft, including eight P-40s and 15 Hawker Hurricanes. Opposing them were 271 Japanese aircraft, including 115 fighters. Although the AVG and the RAF scored some successes against the JAAF, Magwe was continuously bombed, including a very heavy raid on 21 March by 151 bombers and fighters. On 23 March with only four aircraft left, the AVG was forced to relocate to Loiwing, just across the Chinese border."

Magwe will also have reenactments and combat events, please message Devyn Smythe in world if you are interested in roleplaying in the sim.

The event schedule is as follows:

March 18th Reenactments--a short dedication to all those that served in the AVG and veterans of all wars.
March 21st Reeneactments--Bombing campaign by Japanese aircraft on the date Magwe was heavily bombed.

March 23rd--closing words and preparation of the retreat of the AVG into China.

Times: TBA

Blog Spotlight: Maj. Gen. Giano

Today's blog spotlight is on our CO, Major General Guarocuyo Giano:

SL NAME: Guarocuya Giano

MILITARY RANK:  Major General
SQUADRON (S):  HQ, Central Command (CENTCOM)
YOUR POSITION (S) WITH THE TIGERS:
FLYING TIGERS Group Commander

TELL US HOW YOU FIRST BECOME INVOLVED WITH THE TIGERS:
My buddies and I used to fly at 1944 and also at the old Wilder sims. We watched each others' six and a strong bond of brotherhood emerged. Being a veteran and former club biker in rl, I felt it would make sense to organize a group which distinguished us from the rest and demonstrated our loyalty to each other and to our group. So in 2008, along with three other friends, I founded the Flying Tigers because I had read Sonny Barger's book, "Hells Angel" and understood what Sonny meant about brotherhood and loyalty and how the biker club got its name. Having read about the RL Flying Tigers distinguished history, it was obvious to me that I would have volunteered to serve in that unit had I existed back then.  We became famous (or infamous depending on who you talk to) by shooting down just about anything else in the skies.  The legend of the SL Flying Tigers brotherhood was born under fire in aerial combat; fire purifies and we are under constant fire every day. To me there is no stronger bond between humans than those which are forged between brothers in arms.

YOUR FAVORITE PLANE TO FLY:
Jets: F-15 Eagle from NEXGEN (Single seat), NEXGEN JAS-39, NEXGEN  A-10
WW2:  NEXGEN P-51, NEXGEN P-40 (sqdn issue), THI, KUROE, E&I

Helicopter: Spijkers EC 635, UH 72 Lakota

IF YOU COULD INVITE ANYONE FROM REAL LIFE AVIATION INTO SECOND LIFE, WHO WOULD IT BE?   WHY?
Sir Richard Branson, f
or his vision, courage and innovation.
Sonny Barger (founder of the Hells Angels MC) to teach about loyalty.

BESIDES LOVING TO FLY, WHAT ELSE DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN SECOND LIFE? I love to build. I began building space ships and sci fi stuff shortly after joining sl in 2007 a friend (Rogue Harsley) taught me how to get off the ground. I began dogfighting in space ships, then looking for a place to game I came across 1944 where there was lots of dogfighting going on back in those days.

Being a pilot In SL, I have flown and collected just about every builder out there (and still do) and although some are more realistic than others, I enjoy flying them all.

I began to build ww2 because the planes that I wanted to fly did not exist. When I approached some of the existing builders at the time with requests for this paint scheme or airplane or another I was flat out rejected.  So I decided that if I wanted to fly a Flying Tigers p-40 I would have to build it myself and that is how I got started building ww2 and modern airplanes.

Now I prefer to fly airplanes that have a more realistic feel. I am former USARMY Air Cav (67YCrew Chief), USAAF ATC/OPS and USNAVY (Line Plane Captain) and have had 20 years of rl aviation experience as a crew chief and plane captain.  Although SL cannot duplicate the exact physics of a RL aircraft, it does allow fair "imitation" and some builders, such as THI and even some EG (civilian) really come close.  Others are extreme UFO's.  That being said, I enjoy flying them all as long as its a level playing field.  My favorite planes are rated "B" class which allow realism and gaming but are not too extreme in either direction.
