Flying Tigers to Raise Money to Fight Lou Gehrig's Disease!

We are pleased to announce two days of fundraising for the ALS organization. The fundraisers will take place on May 4 at 12pm slt and on May 6 at 10 am slt! Em Ellsmere, the official Second Life spokesperson for ALS.org in world, provided the following information about ALS:

"--What is ALS?--

ALS is more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. It's a devastating neurodegenerative disease and at this time has no cure.  People with ALS become progressively paralyzed until the whole body has failed. Average lifespan after diagnosis is 2-5 years.  ALS knows no boundaries. It affects men, women, all nationalities and all races equally.

--What is The ALS Association?--

The ALS Association (ALSA) is the only national not-for-profit health organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS.  By leading the way in global research, providing assistance for people with ALS through a network grassroots support, and fostering government partnerships, The Association builds hope and enhances quality of life while aggressively searching for new treatments and a cure.

The mission of The ALS Association is to lead the fight to cure and treat ALS through global cutting-edge research, and to empower people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support.

--ALSA in Second Life--

ALSA has joined Second Life to raise more awareness of this disease and to raise funds through charity events, which will help us further our mission.  We also plan to hold virtual support groups in-world for people living with ALS and their families/caregivers.   To verify our work in SL and our donation kiosks, you may call the national headquarters at (US) 888-949-2577.

Autism Society of America in Second Life Fundraiser!

On April 20 and April 22, the Flying Tigers will host a fundraiser for the Austism Society of America's Second Life organization!  The Autism Society of America in Second Life's coordinator, Brett Strand, provide the following information about the organization:

"What is Autism?

Autism is a severe developmental disability which is usually diagnosed around the age of three. It results from a neurological disorder which interferes with brain development; primarily in the parts of the brain that control perception, verbal communication and social interaction.

The term autism is a very broad catch term for a very complex syndrome. Autism is a spectrum disorder and is identified by the acronym ASD ... for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Individuals with ASD exhibit characteristics distributed over a broad spectrum: from individuals profoundly affected with extremely limited independent life skills to those who are seemingly "mildly" affected and function more or less effectively. Each individual on the autism spectrum is unique in his or her own way. As the saying goes: “If you’ve met one person with autism … you’ve met one person with autism.”

What causes autism is a matter of scientific mystery and controversy. Experts have many theories, but no real conclusive understanding of what causes autism. It is generally agreed there is a genetic component to autism. There is also evidence of environmental factors, such as the chemicals we encounter in daily living and in the medications given to children.

The Autism Society of America – Second Life

The Autism Society of America is the leading voice and resource of the entire autism community in education, advocacy, services, research and support. ASA is committed to meaningful participation and self-determination in all aspects of life for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. The vision of ASA-SL is consistent with the vision of ASA-RL. The combination of ASA's grass roots structure and its long history of providing support to individuals, families and professionals makes it an extremely viable vehicle for delivering that same support here in SL.

Second Life offers a very special and unique environment in which to provide that support. SL is a metaverse which literally does not sleep; so people can come together without regard for geography or time zone or any of the other myriad obstacles that prevent people from networking or seeking help in RL.

Similar to ASA in Real Life, ASA-SL exists first and foremost as a support group to support ASD individuals, families with ASD individuals and professionals with ASD clients. We strive to increase autism awareness in SL, to help educate the general population about the challenges families and individuals face and to inform people how they can get involved with helping those who need our help.

To accomplish our goal the ASA-SL has a number of programs and services. In the chapter office is a library with extensive information on autism and RL autism resources and contact information. There is also a media room which features videos on a variety of autism related topics. In addition, the chapter hosts montly support group meetings held in the ASA-SL office on the first Saturday of the month at 5:00 PM SLT.

We live in a time when autism is literally increasing at epidemic rates, and the need for all of us to band together, to combine our resources and work together has never been greater. SL provides that environment to have the level of impact not possible in any other medium. Our mission is to help people come together and discover how all of us can help and support one another to improve the quality of life for all affected by autism".

Feed a Smile Fundraisers (April 13 and 15)!

Feed a Smile, a real life charity that also has a Second Life fundraising arm, will have two fundraisers in our sims on April 13 and 15! Both fundraisers are being sponsored by Amelias' Pilot Lounge! The following description from Feed a Smile's official website describes their work in Second Life:

Since January 2010 Live and Learn in Kenya NGO is also online in the Second Life virtual charity community – Nonprofit Commons. The managers of the Nonprofit Commons go through every detail of an organization’s registration form to assure itself that it really is a charitable non-profit organization and not a computer scam.  LLK operates from a virtual office where people can come in and inform themselves about our work in Kenya, look at photos and, if an LLK member is present, hold a conversation. There are real people behind all of the so-called avatars, so real conversations are held – as well as meetings – either by typing your message or by speaking over a microphone. A child in Kenya – the orphan, Veronica - has already been sponsored through a Second Life contact – which makes it all worthwhile. When you log in to Second Life type either "Brique Topaz", "LLK", or "Feed a Smile" in the Search. LLK also belongs to the world-known organization Techsoup which also works in Second Life.
